The Citadel’s Baker School of Business will unveil their recently completed Bastin Hall, a 44,000-square-foot facility featuring 11 classrooms, seven workrooms, three work areas for students and faculty, 35 faculty offices, an advising center, large common areas, a roof-top terrace, as well as finance, sales, and innovation learning labs.
Located on The Citadel’s Charleston, South Carolina campus, Bastin Hall will also boast numerous original artworks by Jesse Pierpoint. When Pierpoint learned he was selected as the principal artist for this project, he accepted the commission with equal parts excitement and trepidation.
“This was by far the largest project I’ve tackled as an artist, in terms of both scale and scope,” said Pierpoint. The request for 11 pieces, some as large as 20 feet across, to be installed in Bastin Hall, needed to be complete in just over four months.
In a project of this magnitude, designing and painting 11 unique pieces is only part of the challenge. “My studio wasn’t large enough to handle multiple large-scale canvases, so the first thing we needed was a large temporary space where I could work,” said Pierpont. “We also needed to work through the logistics of shipping a 20-foot canvas across the country” he said.
Over the course of a Spokane summer plagued with record-breaking heat waves, hunkered down in an old warehouse off Sprague, Pierpoint and his team worked tirelessly to complete the collection on time. “It definitely got warm in that warehouse,” said Pierpoint, “there were days we had to schedule our work hours around the heat, because by mid-day it was so hot that the paint would dry before I could get in on the canvas.”
Despite logistical challenges, Pierpoint’s Citadel collection came together beautifully. Made up of four unique series of works, each represents a different facet of the college.
The Citadel Collection
Pierpoint created four unique series of works for the walls of Bastin Hall. Each piece is personalized with elements incorporated into the art during the process, making it one of a kind. They are layered into the work and add depth, texture and meaning to each piece.
The Heritage Series
The Heritage Series includes two pieces depicting the ethos of the Citadel.
The Homage Series
The Homage Series includes artwork that depicts an Homage to The Citadel’s distinguished female alumni.
The Industry Series
This includes artwork comprised of the major industries that make up South Carolina’s economy.
The Versus Series
The Versus Series includes artwork that depicts the rise and fall of the financial markets.
